Travel Insurance for 59 year old mostly to cover Scuba Diving.?

I am going on a 3 month trip to South East Asia in September, with the intention of mostly Scuba Diving–particularly Indonesia. The few quotes I can get (age) are expensive, and often have huge restrictions on diving depths, etc. Anyone got any ideas? Have travelled extensively but usually without insurance–must be getting responsible in my old age!!

Most “regular” insurance considers scuba diving an extreme sport. Couple that with your age and you will get some outrageous quotes.

First, if you currently have health insurance, determine how it works outside of the US. Some policies are better than others. Either way you need to know what your current policy covers.

Second, look into regular travel insurance. This is great for lost luggage, missed flights, hotel overbooking, and stuff like that.

Third, look into scuba diving insurance. I highly recommend DAN (Divers Alert Network). It is a secondary insurance meaning it kicks in after your primary health care is used. Since most health insurance won’t cover scuba diving, it kicks in quickly. DAN insurance costs like $25 per year to become a member, and then $75 per year for the premium coverage. The premium coverage will cover more than just scuba diving related things. For $100 total dollars you can argue the coverage. DAN is also recognized worldwide. I haven’t had to use my coverage, but I have called the help line a few times with questions.

Back to the original question, most underwriters have no clue about scuba diving and they will cover their bases with high quotes. DAN has researched diving and diving related medicine for a while. They also realize that scuba diving is relatively safe.

Diving In Spain – A Guide

Diving is unlike anything else except, perhaps, going into space, but better. And Spain provides many interesting dive sites. With over 4000km of coastline Spain offers a choice of sites for beginners to the most experienced of divers.

Combining both adventure and sport scuba, diving in Spain is fun and promotes awareness about nature conservation.

It is possible to dive all year round in Spain however the warm Mediterranean waters of southern Spain  offer a more comfortable experience and there are many companies along the here that are more likely to speak English than in the less touristy areas of Spain.

Of particular note are the Illes de Medes, a series of protected since 1983, small islands off the coast of the Costa Brava. Here you will find over 1000 species of marine and animal life. Alongside is Dolphin Cave, a 15m dive site.

The Pecio del San Andrés is a paddle steamship made of steel, which sank in 1856 during a storm. Although its official name is el Miño, it is more commonly known among divers as El San Andres. Just parts of the wreck are left, notably the stern and paddle wheels.

Other general highlights  are the abundance of Moray eels, Wrasse, soft corals, scorpion fish and octopi along the coastline of the Costa del Sol.

The Atlantic coast is less popular for divers due to the less developed tourism in the area but still offers some great dive sites. The waters here are colder and English is less widely spoken however the areas of San Sebastian and La Coruna are the main dive centres on this coast.

The Balearic and Canaries are good dive locations with Tenerife being the jewel of the islands where Stingrays , Sharks, Baracuda and Octopii can be seen  as well as some spectacular geological formations.

Visibility in all dives sites is good to very good.

Spanish Law states you must be over 16 years of age to engage in scuba diving activities in Spain.  Some autonomous regional governments have passed their own laws to relax this limit – but please do check with local dive centers before booking and ensure you have adequate insurance to cover you for this activity.

Best time to dive:

Summers are hot, Spring and Autumn mild. The best time for diving is May to September, although the Canaries offer  great year-round diving.
