Crippen complained about US support before death
Nine days before he died in an open-water race, Fran Crippen sent an e-mail to the head of USA Swimming, complaining about a lack of financial support and the failure to send coaches to “protect the athletes” at meets around the world.

PADI open water referral course – is it a MUST DO?
My ideal target is to get an open water diver qualification for a start so I can dive with a friend without instructor for 18M.
My question is – Is it a must DO to do the PADI open water referral course first?
or can I just jump straight to do the Open Water Diver Course straight away without any ‘pre-course’?
I know of course having a pre-course will be helpful, but just want to know is it necessary and must spend money on?
Many times have been told from different diving schools that I have to do one of these course first before taking the open water diver course. Are they just want to earn more money by saying that or really is a must do?!
Also, does the open water referral course stuff repeats in the open water diver course? What’s the main difference between the 2 courses? I know besides the getting qualify to be open water diver.
Please any info will help me decide what to do next. Thanks.
P.S £75 for the referral course, is that reasonable?
You’re confusing some things here. The PADI referral program allows you to do your academics in your location and then to do the actual open water diving portion at a destination of your choice that has a PADI shop.
Yes..there is a sort of “pre course” but it’s called Discover Scuba. The shop ought to be offering this for free and not charge for it other than perhaps a few dollars for pool admission to help cover their rental costs. You don’t need to do Discover Scuba but it is a good idea. Better to find out if scuba is for you by only spending the price of a beer than laying out for a course only to find you’re claustrophobic and panic easily.
All you need do is head in to your local dive shop, sign up for the open water and choose if you’d like to do your open water dives at your location or at a different one.
The referral program is really only to get people diving in areas that are cold water and give them the opportunity to do the dive portion in a warm environment instead. These days, probably 25% of people wouldn’t even think of trying diving if they could only complete their course in cold water. Giving them the option of warm water gets more folk diving. I don’t personally agree with it since I believe people should learn in challenging environments which usually leads to better divers but hey…I’m not a PADI Bossman.
