Will I enjoy scuba diving?

I am going to Fiji next month, and all of my friends are scuba diving there. I have never done it and am considering a short certification course while I’m there. The problem is, I have to decide NOW if I want to sign up for an open water shark dive the day after I have my certification. I don’t know how to predict if I will like it enough to keep at it. I have looked into Discover Scuba locally, but they’re all at least $40.

Any suggestions?

Wow…talk about impossible questions. There is no way a bunch of strangers on the internet will be able to tell you if you will or will not enjoy something.

In my experience with teaching people how to dive, the biggest single indicator that I’ve found that correlates with whether or not a student will be successful at becoming a scuba diver is motivation. So you should honestly ask yourself why you are considering becoming a scuba diver. If you are thinking about it simply because your friends are scuba divers and you don’t want to be left behind while they are all out diving, then I would say the chances are good that you will not enjoy yourself and you may not even complete the certification course (assuming the dive center in Fiji takes their responsibilities seriously and performs more than rubber-stamp training). If you have any reservations about being in water over your head or are not comfortable being in or under water, your chances of having an enjoyable experience scuba diving are very low.

On the other hand, if you’ve always wanted to be a scuba diver but never had the opportunity or the right incentive to do it then chances are you will enjoy it. The key is that you have to want it for yourself, not because of others. If you enjoy being in water, have average or better swimming abilities, and are comfortable being underwater as well as on the surface then I think you will almost certainly enjoy it and may even develop a passion for it. It all depends on you.

Even if you are able to complete your certification I don’t think you should sign up for a shark dive before you even know what diving is like. Also not knowing anything about the conditions on that particular dive would be cause for pause, since some shark dives are in high current areas which is not a good environment for a brand new diver. I think you should wait until you know both something about the dive and how you feel about scuba before signing up in advance. Don’t try to run before you learn to walk.

If you have the opportunity to try Discover Scuba locally, I say take it. At least then you will have some first-hand knowledge to base your decisions on instead of guessing and relying on other people’s opinions.

Good luck with your choice.
