which hawaiian island is the best to vacation at in december?

i want to relax on the beach. go on dive or snorkel tours. see the night life. hike a volcano. go kayaking. also, i would like some romantic things to do.

in your opinion, which is the best island to find any of these activities?

Each island is soooo different:

If you want to relax on the beach, then the Big Island has very few natural beaches, as it is almost all solid black lava (island is too new for coral). For the same reason, there is less snorkeling here (with one exception: Kealakekua Bay near kailua-kona), but being able to dive with manta rays which you can do here is exciting! If you want to hike to a live volcano, then of course Kilauea and Volcanoes National Park is incomparable. The Big Island is the most exotic island, is even hotter temperature-wise. The Kona Resort has luxury grass hut bungalows right on the beach (expensive, but all-inclusive).

Oahu is the only island with a major metropolitan city (Honolulu) and any substantial night life (downtown and Waikiki), great shows, great and varied restaurants at all price levels. This is my favorite island, has a little of each of the other islands (but no live volcano) and has the most accessible beaches and snorkeling areas (Shark’s Cove on North Shore, of course Hanauma Bay, etc.). You can sit on the beach in an urban Waikiki setting, go to North Shore with its surfing community, or go to the windward side for lonely tropical beaches. Hike to a tropical waterfall through a bamboo forest (Manoa Falls), eat at a lovely beachside restaurant (Hau Tree Lanai), if you are with someone, buy each other beautiful hand-made flower leis from the lei-makers on Mauna Kea street near Chinatown (Cindy’s Lei Shoppe). Kayaking around Kaneohe Bay and Kailua is fun and spectacular, there are even little islands you can visit. For romance, stay at the Kahala Resort which is away from Waikiki (you can book a room overlooking the dophin lagoon or the ocean), or if you want 5-star luxury the Halekulani is the best on the island. If you want to be far from Honolulu but still have access at times, the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore has bungalows right on the beach.

If you can do without the Honolulu cultural amenities, Maui has “glamorous tropical resort” to a science, where beautiful resorts line the beaches at Kaanapali and Wailea/Makena one after the other for miles. The drive through the rain forest along the sea cliffs to Hana is world-famous, with a tropical waterfall and pool at almost every turn in some places…stop for the local banana bread stands on the way. At the end is the town of Hana..a lush tropical setting right out of the movies. Stay at the famous Hana Maui Resort, (or the Hana Kai resort..a condo complex if you want to spend less $$$). Very romantic! Hike up Haleakala volcano (dormant at the moment), snorkel in Turtle Town off Makena Beach or take the cruise to Molokini, a sunken caldera in the ocean filled with coral.

The oldest island is Kauai, with the greenest and most eroded mountains, right out of movies about the South Pacific (well okay, most of those movies were filmed on this island including South Pacific, Jurassic Park, etc.). However, it is VERY quiet here, with almost no nightlife. If the waves are behaving, you can kayak the Na Pali coast where the cliffs along the ocean have sea caves and waterfalls that fall into the sea…if too rough you can take a zodiac tour in an inflatable boat. Poipu and Kii beaches have great snorkeling and diving opportunities. Take a helicopter ride to an isolated valley on the Na Pali coast, they will leave you breakfast and champagne, pick you up later.

So, can you visit more than one island? It is not that expensive to hop…
