What should I look for when buying used scuba gear?

Long time snorkeler and want to finally take the plunge into scuba. But I am trying to save a little cash and go with used scuba gear instead of buying everything brand new. I have been seeing complete gear packages on craigslist for $250-$300 which would be a substantial savings. But what should I look for when inspecting the gear?

You aren’t qualified to know good or bad gear. What you should be looking for is gear that has proof that it’s been inspected by a technician from a reputable dive shop. That deal may look good on the outside but could kill you on the inside or at least cause you to spend more money on more gear if what you purchase turns out to be a dud.
You can get just as good a deal by hitting a dive shop that has an inhouse dive club. Many club members regularly will offer up gear they no longer require through the shop on a consignment basis. The shop WILL insist on inspecting the gear before they put it on the shop floor for sale and any repairs or servicing will be done. It’s in that dive shop’s best interest to do it. They want you to come back. Dead divers don’t come back.
